Fall 2012 Mini Portrait Sessions

Monday, March 11th, 2013

On a beautiful Saturday last October, I met a few great families in Forest Park for some mini portrait sessions. It was a fun day and a fabulous time with great clients. Oh, and we got some great pictures too!

My plan is to have mini sessions in the Saint Louis area in the spring and fall of each year. I’ll try to schedule some in the Neosho or Joplin area when I can as well. This is a perfect opportunity to get that important yearly family portrait. I don’t regularly offer family sessions as a general rule, so if you are looking to have one with me, you should check out my next post which will be about dates and availability for my upcoming April mini portrait sessions.

Here are highlights from last fall:

What to Wear for your Family Portrait Session

Saturday, March 9th, 2013

I get asked this all the time, in the beginning I didn’t know what to say. But now, I have developed quite the opinion on what works best (and a little bit of what doesn’t work). So… “So anyways, let’s get down to the nitty-gritty” (said in my best Jack Black a la Nacho Libre impression)

1. Pick a color scheme.

For family portraits, the big question is color. Do we need to match? Should we all wear white shirts and blue jeans? Fortunately, we don’t live in the 90s anymore, so… No. You don’t need to match perfectly. The word I like to use is COORDINATE.

You could pick the outfit you want to wear then go from closet to closet in your house picking outfits for your family that look good with what you are wearing. That is one way and I think it works well. You can coordinate however you like, but here’s my method:

MY OCD METHOD
To me, a portrait sessions end goal is the WALL. I’m hoping it is, but maybe this isn’t your objective, (if not, then your job is easier) but for me I want family pictures taken so I can hang them. So I start by picking where I would like to have these pictures showcased. I’m fairly particular with the way I choose colors in my house and how I like to stick with them. One room is decorated with blue and grey and white and I have tried to maintain the integrity of this color scheme down to the pictures hanging in that room. I’m like this all over the house. It is helpful for me to think about what colors I want to get out of the session. With that in mind, I pick anywhere between 2 and 4 colors and stick to them when selecting our outfits.

Here are some great examples:

what to wear

More thoughts on color: Solid black and white are not generally my favorite. I think this is because they are such fully saturated colors and I don’t think they look the best on skin. I suggest breaking up a black or white t-shirt with a patterned sweater or scarf or some other layer. Of course, like anything in this article, take it with a grain of salt and wear what you want. I promise I won’t object.

2. Accessorize

The girls especially should try to pick two from the following:
necklace
bracelets
earrings
scarf
hat
headband or hair bow
belt
attention getting shoes
…. you get the idea

Guys, if you aren’t really in to any of the above mentioned items, may I suggest layering? Think:
Vests
Ties
jackets
layering your shirts

3. Hair and Makeup

You don’t get your family portraits taken every day. Heck! If you are like most families, you don’t get them taken every year even. So treat this as a very special event. Make time to prepare before your session. I would even encourage you mommies to have your hair an makeup done professionally (of course, budget allowing). It’s good to feel beautiful, and I really really want you to come to your session feeling that way.

In closing, I want to remind you to be true to yourself in your pictures and not to let the outfit selection stress you out so much that you can’t be happy on photo day. I’m looking forward to the family session, hope you are too!

Wheeler Family

Friday, March 8th, 2013

So finally feeling like I’ve done right by my blog (posting about the birth story and everything), it’s time for us to do some catching up. I’ll be spending some time over the next several days putting up pictures from sessions, some of which happened close to Kal’s birthday or after. Let’s get re-acquainted, shall we?

The Wheeler family and I got together in the H.E.A.T. of last July on their new and gorgeous farm in Anderson, MO. I always love to see these guys and am so glad I was able to squeeze in a session with them when I was down meeting my nephew, Grey. These kids are so great! I love how silly and real they are with me! Oh and little Harper is a star in their family, they all adore her and it’s obvious.

Martinez Family Session

Monday, July 23rd, 2012

After helping put on my 10 year reunion and having days of delay due to hard drive failure – I’m back on the blog! I’m glad to have several sessions to show this week. I’ll be kickin’ off this lovely Monday morning with the beautiful and ever fun and friendly Martinez family. Btw, Max is Sophia’s main man… she’s always talking about this little charmer. And his baby sister, Lucia visited me a while back for her newborn session! She’s about to turn one so let’s hear it for this gorgeous gal!

BTW- today I’m officially one month from my estimated due date… time to start wrapping up some of this stuff and slowing down for maternity leave. Criss-cross those fingers for me that I can get to that point! Thank-ya much!

And here’s the Martinez session (taken at Shaw Nature Reserve in Grey Summit):

Spring Mini Sessions!

Friday, April 6th, 2012

So earlier this year, I announced that I would be trying to focus most of my time on the newborn and wedding side of my business. This doesn’t mean that I won’t do senior or family sessions, just that the newborns and weddings will get top priority in scheduling. If I am able to squeeze another type of session into my schedule I will make my best effort! I also promised to offer mini-sessions; that way if you have had a hard time getting those pictures taken, this may work for you!  I’d like to continue these every year in the Spring and Fall, but no promises this Fall, with Baby #2 coming in late August!  So please shoot me an email if you would like to sign up for next month’s mini-sessions!  If these times book quickly, I will announce an additional date.  Thanks!  Hope to see you soon!!
